Instructors Information
Jeff Mauritzen’s photographic assignments and adventures have immersed him in vivid landscapes across all seven continents and more than 60 countries. Whether photographing penguin antics in Antarctica or polar bears in the Arctic, his work reflects an enduring sense of curiosity, respect, and awe for the natural world. His photography has appeared in hundreds of publications, including more than two dozen National Geographic books, National Geographic Traveler magazine articles, The Wall Street Journal, Lonely Planet guidebooks, BBC Travel, and in a recent installation at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Jeff is also a seasoned photography educator, guiding, and lecturing on natural history–focused expeditions worldwide for National Geographic Expeditions. In addition to his editorial and expedition work, he collaborates with global brands and Fortune 500 companies, bringing the same storytelling approach to commercial and corporate photography.
Lori Epstein earned a journalism degree from Boston University, College of Communication, and later worked as a photographer’s assistant and freelance photographer until transitioning to photo editing full time. She joined National Geographic Kids Books in 2005 as a photo editor, and now leads a team of in-house and freelance photo editors and photo researchers producing about 35 kids books a year. Lori helped to develop, and now works to maintain the National Geographic Kids visual esthetic, which unifies the brand in the marketplace and helps set it apart from the competition. As the Senior Director of Photography for National Geographic Kids Books, Lori works from idea to product, curating existing photography and producing original photography (sometimes her own!).
