Lighting Fundamentals: A Bright Idea with Jose Esquilin

Saturday, November 7, 2026 | 9:00 – 10:15 a.m. | Auditorium

Presentation Description

“Lighting Fundamentals: A Bright Idea” is a practical and creative approach to understanding light with intention. In this class, I break down how to identify, shape, and use both natural and artificial light to strengthen composition, mood, and storytelling within an image. From available light to strobes and constant lighting, the focus is less about complicated setups and more about learning how light can become an active part of your visual language. Whether you’re a beginner or refining your style, this session is designed to help photographers see light differently and use it with greater purpose and confidence.

Speaker Information

Jose Esquilin

I’m a photographer, visual storyteller, and retired U.S. Navy veteran with over a decade behind the camera, primarily focused on athletes, portraits, and creating emotion through intentional lighting. My style leans dramatic and cinematic, but at the core of it all, I’m drawn to images that feel real and connected to the subject. Beyond creating photographs, I’m passionate about helping other photographers better understand light — whether it’s natural light, strobes, or constant lighting — and how to use it with purpose instead of just effect. Through workshops, speaking engagements, and collaboration, I enjoy sharing both the technical and creative side of the craft in a way that feels approachable and practical. More than anything, I want people to leave inspired to create work that not only looks good, but actually says something.
